Types of Vampyres & Different Modes of Feeding
Types of Vampyres
In the same way that there are many ways to categorize types of witches, vampyres have various ways to break down the nuance in vampyre identity to help each other understand and relate to one another. The most common method to differentiate between the different types of vampyres is to break them down by the way they feed. So that’s where we’ll begin!
The types of Vampyres there are is a nuanced subject
The ideas around what makes someone a Vampyre have changed drastically over the last 30+ years and along the way, many points of view have been debated. In this post I will go over Vampyric categorization by means of feeding styles.
There are groups within the Vampyre Community who believe that anyone adept in the occult is capable of honing vampyric capabilities. That anyone with enough practice and study in the arts of subtle energies can utilize Vampyric gifts to better their life. There are others who believe that Vampyric nature is only bestowed upon people who are born with the “dark gift.” They believe that only certain people are predisposed to coming into their Vampyric nature.
I personally think it’s a mixture of the two. I think there are those who are born predisposed with Vampyric potential and that they have an actual inherent vampyric nature within them. They possess a true bloodthirst or energy lust that needs to be taken care of to remain balanced. I do however believe that anyone who is adept in the occult has the ability to utilize vampyric energy & magickal practices within their paradigms and have success with them. It’s a desire to indulge, rather than a need. I also believe that every Vampyre can learn to feed in all ways. That a single Vampyre is capable of embodying every single type of Vampyre on this list if they chose to learn. (Aside from people who feel they need to consume blood to stave off medical illness, but nothing I write really applies to them since they’re very atheistic and nonspiritual usually about their condition… but we’ll talk about that later)
Understanding the Types of Vampyres
One of the most common questions you’ll be asked in conversation when discussing each other’s vampyric nature is “What type of vampyre are you?” and 90% of the time they expect you to answer with a feeding type. Psychic Vampyres, Sanguine Vampyres, & Eros or Sexual Vampyres. Then there’s eclectic feeders who can utilize several types of feeding methods. Eclectic feeders are commonly referred to as “hybrid” vampyres.
Vampyric Identifier: Feeding Types
While there are many different types of vampyres, the commonality between most Real Vampyres that you’ll find are that they are people who take in or “feed” on energy that emanates from other beings or sources to maintain their energetic or physical homeostasis and/or boost their metaphysical workings.
They do this through the following means:
- Psychic Vampyres – The most common form of Vampyre you’ll find these days are Psychic or Psy Vampyres. Psychic Vampyres feed from the energy that emanates from living things. Different types of Psy Vampyres feed from different types of energy. I’ve seen the Psychic Vampyre get broken down into different facets, things like Astral Vampyres, Pranic Vampyres, etc. Essentially anyone that feeds from any living energy source on this plane or another could fall into the Psychic or Psy/Psi Vampyre category.
- Emotional Vampyres are those who feed and thrive from the energy created from the emotions of others. Sometimes it’s a side effect of improper energy balance or Vampyric care. If you’re someone who is unaware of your Vampyric nature, you can completely throw off your mental balance compromising your emotional well being by unwittingly feeding on the strongest emotions in the room. You will start to latch on to dramatic situations and can begin to find yourself involved in a lot of unnecessary emotional turmoil, often not even your own. It can become a habit that you can’t escape if you’re not careful. Eventually, you can dive into becoming a Drama/Chaos Vampyre if you’re not careful. This is often what younger vampyres start out as….
- Elder Emotional Vampyres does not include every emotional vampyre as they age. Elder in the VC begets the image of someone wiser, more experienced, more responsible, and that’s how I mean it here too. They’re the true empathic vampyres who learned how to wield their emotional feeding in positive/productive ways.. Many emotional and empathic vampyres find themselves in positions of service, especially healing services, as the ability to heal means taking in the emotional energy and transmuting it for your clients. Emotional Vampyres feed on what people don’t want energetically and the Vampyre helps heal the person in the process. They often walk a tightrope balance between being healthy and being 2 steps away from becoming their dramatic counterparts, but their wisdom holds them from going over the edge until extenuating circumstances arise (that we pray never have to arrive)
- Drama/Chaos Vampyres are the darker side of Emotional Vampyres. Drama or Chaos Vampyres are individuals who feed off of the negative energy created from reactions and emotion. Chaos Vampyres thrive off of the attention of being involved with negative interactions. They feed on conflict and testing the people around them. Just as described above for Emotional Vampyres, an unconscious/unaware Vampyre can unknowingly become a Chaos Vampyre because of their inability to regulate their energy intake nor their personal energy systems. They will begin to subconsciously create things to feed on and they’ll orchestrate problems to feed on the hype and drama they cause. They’ll latch onto other people’s drama because their vampyric nature is latching onto the strongest emotional responses around. They begin to stir up shit for sport and food. This type of feeding is a lot like being faced with a Narcissist, so you need to be careful when this type of behavior presents itself. If you become the Drama Vampyre, it takes a lot of shadow work to not only recognize it, but to reprogram your thought patterns and behavior to stop needing to feed drama to your shadow side and sate your needs in a more healthy way.
- Astral Vampyres are Vampyres that are able to travel through the astral plane and feed off of the energy of other people within the astral plane. They are able to project themselves as an astral being into the unconscious plane. Often this is done with people who are asleep and in a dream state. Personally, this is the only form of feeding I have absolutely no experience with that I know of and therefore not my forte to teach much about, but I would love to hear of anyone’s experience with this if they have it.
- Eros Vampyres – Then there are the Eros Vampyres. Eros Vampyres are vampyres who feed through sex. Generally they feed on the energy raised during courtship or intercourse… or fluids that are generated during intercourse. Eros Vampyres are often very sultry and seductively primal in nature. They’re the types that enjoy “the hunt” and feed on the energy raised during the entire process.

- Sanguine Vampyres – Sanguinarian Vampyres at this point are probably the most rare, albeit more common than you think. Sanguinarian Vampyres are those who partake in blood feeding. Some Vampyres believe that blood as a substance has the highest concentration of life force energy that you can get.
- Then, there are Sanguivores & Med Sangs.
- Sanguivores are vampyres who feel the need to consume a larger than average amount of blood, even for a real vampyre. Their need to consume blood is generally something they can’t go without. They often have a degradation of their quality of life without consuming that larger amount of blood so they often will turn to alternative upkeep methods like consuming animal blood in various forms. Sanguivores may still interact with the metaphysical, occult, and/or lifestyle side of the VC.
- Med Sangs are individuals who believe there is a physiological/medical need for blood in their diets who strip the metaphysics and the energy completely out of vampyrism and believe it to be a strictly physiological necessity. They are usually atheists who don’t buy into the value of “energetic nutrition” so to speak. They also historically reject the “status quo” of the popular “socio-political” vampyre culture narrative. A good portion of the Med Sang community will largely contest everything our Coven has to say about vampyrism as they are not known to ascribe to any of the spiritual and energetic things that we do. While we all don’t see eye to eye on the reasons for the vampyric phenomenon, their truth is just as valid as ours if it’s being lived authentically. If you’re someone who’s stumbled upon this site who identifies more with the medsang side, see The Red Cellar’s Website.
- All Med Sangs are sanguivores, but not all sanguivores are med-sangs.

The dreaded term “hybrid”
Hybrid as a term doesn’t actually tell anyone anything about what you are, does it? Are you a hybrid of feeding types? Are you a hybrid of vampyre & wolf, vampyre & otherkin or therian of some other type? Unless you’re going to follow up with that information, saying you’re a “hybrid” is pretty useless of a descriptor.
I’ve personally switched to using “eclectic” which is equally as vague but evokes much less “Underworld movie” energy.
Madame Corvidae’s thoughts on Vampyre Types
The conversation regarding Types of Vampyres is one that has been regurgitated over and over through the decades. Yet, despite this fact, not a lot of valuable growth has occurred when it’s come to the way Vampyres describe themselves. Personally, I find the categorization of Vampyres by the way they feed to be a bit silly and mildly invasive. But, I’m also the type of person who finds it strange when people make being a vegan or some other nutritional label part of their personality too. Why does a stranger need to know if I’m consuming energy or blood? What assumptions are you making based on knowing that information? Plus, if you’re to make something useful out of your vampyrism, your feeding style is just one piece of a much larger puzzle. Despite my personal feelings about the way this topic is wielded in conversation or in life, I do understand the importance of descriptive terms to identify our experiences by. So this lesson is still important nonetheless.
The Case for Further Exploration
There’s been a lot of cyclical conversation over the years over what does and doesn’t make someone a vampyre, the proper way to spell vampyre, the proper term for the proper type of vampyrism, etc. This became a reigning argument for a very long time in the community, therefore causing what I’ve colloquially called “label trauma” for many people within the VC.
The nature of this label trauma has caused many to be unwilling to discuss what being a vampyre means to them. The idea of breaking down vampyric existence is stressful because trying to have these conversations in the past has always caused issues. We’re hoping to untangle some of these feelings and facilitate respectful discussions about such things again in the future. We’ll be stuck and stagnant forever if we can’t discuss who and what we are without fear.
In this Coven, we look to explore how to broaden our lexicons when it comes to methods to describe variance in people’s vampyric experiences. I look forward to discussing this with you again in the future to dig in deeper to this subject.
